Navajo crafted "Sand-cast" belt buckle with turquoise accent

This buckle style, commonly referred to as "sand-cast" is based in one of the oldest styles of Native American jewelry. Following a centuries old tradition of using natural sand stone as a mold for a jewelry design early native artists would carve a pattern into a piece of sand stone. Molten sterling was poured into the pattern. A second piece of sand-stone was placed on-top of the molten sterling enclosing the design and completing the mold. When the metal cooled the sand-stones were broken open revealing a single jewelry item.

Always one-of-a-kind and always unique.

Emulating a sun-burst pattern the design motif featured on this classic buckle was most likely inspired by early pottery or textile designs.

Handcrafted in solid sterling silver this buckle measures approximately 3.5 inches across the widest point of the oval. The single turquoise set in the center is natural turquoise from Nevada.
